September 1st, 2017

Ten three-year-olds remain in contention for Saturday’s 2017 Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield; a race representing particularly good value from a betting perspective and offering several good opportunities to place a winning wager.

Merchant Navy ($3.10) has not been seen at the races since autumn, but remains an outright favourite in 2017 McNeil Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Godolphin colt Trekking ($3.50) and Kobayashi ($9).

Will Merchant Navy justify favouritism and win the 2017 McNeil Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

1st

Hualalai ($12)

Sydney raider Hualalai has returned to racing in excellent form this time in and is over the McNeil Stakes odds at his current quote. Kept fresh with up to four weeks between his races, the Street Cry colt won the Albion Park Cellars Handicap (1200m) in late May; running second in a Rosehill race over 1350m on June 17th before flying home to win the Pro Rata ATC Membership Handicap (1400m) on July 1st. the colt has trialled well in the lead-up to this race and has the class and perhaps fitness edge to take up the running in the McNeil Stakes and will be tough to run down.

2nd

Merchant Navy ($3.10)

Merchant Navy is perhaps the class horse of this field, but he is yet to have a start as a three-year-old and it is therefore tough to see how he might stack up amongst this McNeil Stakes field. The Fastnet Rock colt is yet to taste anything but success through his three career starts to date and was last seen savaging the line for a smart win in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) on April 25th. Mark Zahra will take the ride on Merchant Navy, who could enjoy the run of the race from the ideal barrier 3.

3rd

Trekking ($3.50)

Trekking has posted a number of smart performances and results through his short racing career and is a live chance of winning the McNeil Stakes. Debuting for a strong win in a Rosehill Gardens minor over 1100m in December, the Street Cry colt resumed in autumn for second in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m), but failed to fire in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and was sent to the paddock. Sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run for third in the Listed The Rosebud (1100m) on August 12th, Trekking will be ridden by Craig Williams in the McNeil Stakes and will jump from barrier 2.
