A talented field of thirteen three-year-olds have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by several notable competitors through the two-year-old autumn season.
An exciting prospect for major sprint races for three-year-olds through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Robbie Laing has confirmed Boomwaa in the final field for the 2014 McNeil Stakes.
Securing a commendable total of one win and five minor places from ten competitive starts so far, Boomwaa displayed a keen turn of foot to finish third in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) on debut in October; continuing to build in form and class on his way to a standout victory in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) on November 9th.
Retuning in 2014 in similarly good form, the Mutawaajid gelding finished second in each of his first two starts before becoming the first two-year-old to contest the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) in more than 20 years on February 15th.
Finishing a credible fifth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) one week later, Boomwaa will carry good black type form into the 2014 McNeil Stakes, having finished third in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) last time out on August 16th.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 McNeil Stakes in exciting Team Hawkes-trained runner and last start winner Nostradamus.
Contesting just four race starts so far, Nostradamus debuted with a near-three length victory in a minor event over 1100m in January before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 8th and seventh in the Blue Diamond Stakes before returning to the paddock.
Overcoming only a fair start to win the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) last time out on August 16th, the Hawkes are understandably confident of another strong performance from Nostradamus this weekend, particularly after being allocated the ideal barrier 2.
As expected, trainer Mick Price will launch a four-pronged assault on the 2014 McNeil Stakes, accepting positions in the final field for classy stable mates Moonovermanhattan, Cornrow, Jabali and Nordic Empire.
Contesting just one race start to date, Moonovermanhattan is without doubt the unknown force of Price’s four, but did claim the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on that occasion.
While yet to break through for a maiden race win, Cornrow enters the 2014 McNeil Stakes as one of his age groups most consistent performers, having secured five places from eight starts, including two at Group 1 level.
Arguably the most exciting runner in Price’s McNeil Stakes attack, Jabali finished second in the Blue Diamond Stakes most notably, and has good form around the majority of his confirmed rivals this weekend.
Considered a leading chance for success in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13th, Nordic Empire was unlucky to finish fourth in the Vain Stakes last time out, but appears a good chance of returning to the winner’s circle this weekend from the central barrier 6.
