McNeil Stakes 2011 Nominations

August 22nd, 2011

The action of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival steps up a notch this Saturday, August 27, at Caulfield Racecourse with the running of a number of key lead-up races to the big spring features including the 2011 HDF McNeil Stakes.

This year the H.D.F. McNeil Stakes nominations have attracted 17 hopeful horses, with some of last season’s top performing juveniles stepping out for their first or second run as three-year-olds.

Not only is the McNeil Stakes 2011 an excellent event to enjoy a punt on through Luxbet, it also serves as a great early guide for the upcoming three-year-old Group One showdowns including the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.

Among the highest-rated McNeil Stakes entries are Clarry Conners’ Flying Spur filly Satin Shoes coming off a win in the Listed Quezette Stakes, the much spruiked Bart Cummings-trained colt Do You Think and Peter Moody’s duo of Golden Archer and Metonymy.

Of the McNeil Stakes nominees, the shortest-priced horse in the 2011 Caulfield Guineas odds at Luxbet is Do You Think.

The well-bred son of Starcraft from Danehill mare Chickens won their opening two career starts during autumn before running a credible eighth, beaten two lengths, behind Peter Snowden’s champion colt Helmet in the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

Do You Think, like a number of other HDF McNeil Stakes entries, will be using the race as a starting point towards the Caulfield Guineas.

Other Caulfield Guineas-bound gallopers nominated for Saturday include the Danny O’Brien-trained Decircles, and Vatican.

The Byron Cozamanis-trained Vatican, a son of 2005 Caulfield Guineas winner God’s Own, is an $81 roughie in the Caulfield Guineas betting markets at Luxbet as they are still a maiden after five career starts.

“He’s a progressive horse with a lot of ability but we have just got to teach him to settle a bit,” Cozamanis said.

“We are going for the Guineas, but if not he will be freshened up for the sprints.”

Vatican is likely to be at long odds in the McNeil Stakes markets if they are paid up for at acceptance stage on Wedensday, making them a nice place bet through Luxbet.
